Daily Bible Reading
Cultivating a habit of daily Bible Reading is very important to the spiritual health of the Christian. There are many ways of accomplishing this. I will cover a few here.
Why should I read the Bible daily?
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
1. To keep in touch with God
2. For our edification
3. To learn what God wants from us
4. For comfort and answers to our questions
5. To learn how to witness to others
How do I read the Bible Daily?
There are any number of ways to plan to read your Bible Daily. Here are a few suggestions to help you
come up with a plan that’s right for you.
1. Decide and commit to read your Bible Daily. Before we do anything, we must decide
to do it and then commit to action.
2. Pick a time (or times) to read. Many people say they read in the morning to set the tone for
the day. But if another time works better for you, I say, go for it. The important thing is that you read.
You must decide on a certain amount of time you will commit to; but you can divide the time up,
if it fits your schedule better.
3. Decide where to start. Some people like to just randomly open up their Bible and start reading.
Others like to start in Genesis and read through Revelation. If you are a relatively new scholar of the
Bible, it may be best to start in John or Matthew to understand the New Testament first. Some
people like to follow a specific plan. You and the Holy Spirit will come up with a plan that is best
for you. Keep in mind that your needs will be changing as youchange and grow in the Lord.
4. Come up with your plan. As I said above, your plan for daily Bible Reading can be any way
that you and the Holy Spirit choose. There are many plans to read the Bible through in a year.
Though this is a worthy goal, it shouldn’t become such a priority that we neglect study. Just reading
the word is not enough, we must study and pray to understand what we read. Most plans to read
the Bible through in a year call for reading three or four chapters a day. You can start with Genesis
and read through Revelation. Another popular plan calls for starting in Genesis, Psalms and Luke,
and reading a chapter or two out of each book. Or you can search the internet yourself by typing in
“read the Bible through in a year”. There are many different plans, if you are interested in doing this.
5. Put your plan into action. The only way to get started is by action. Just start reading.
Don’t waste a lot of time coming up with a plan. Plans are no good unless followed by action.
Today is the day to start. If you are a planner, tell yourself the plan will come later. The
important thing is to get started reading today. It is a good idea to pray before reading.
God sent the Holy Spirit to teach and comfort us. Pray for understanding.
If you have an android device such as: a smart phone or tablet, you might want to explore
the Bible study apps. I use one called Daily Bible. It supplies a “verse of the day” and a
daily Bible Reading. When I’m tired, I have it read to me on my smart phone or Kindle.
I hope this has helped you to be able to:
- Decide to read
- Commit to action
- Choose a time
- Make a plan
- Follow your plan with action
Remember, today is the best time to start a good habits, like daily Bible Reading and prayer.
