Peace is a Blessing From God

Are you feeling peaceful today? Are you calm in your spirit? If you answered no to these questions; there is something you should know. Peace is a blessing from God. It doesn’t have to do with our present circumstances, our bank account, our relationships, or our lot in life.

Peace is a spiritual gift. It is not dependent on anything or anyone on this earth. It is a peace that the world can’t understand. The world can’t give it to you, and the world can’t take it away; unless you allow it to. Only God can bless us with peace that passes all (earthly) understanding.

Psalm 29:11 – The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

God’s peace guards our hearts and minds

Philippians 4:7 NIV – And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The peace that God gives has the power to guard (or protect) our hearts and our minds. When we believe the gospel message and give our hearts and minds to God the power of Christ comes into our life in the form of the Holy Spirit. Christ lives in and through us:

Romans 8:10 – But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.

It is the power of Christ, in us, that will protect our hearts and minds. But there is another component here. We must have righteousness. That righteousness is Christ in us; but we can make that power weak by indulging in sin. In a sense, indulging in sin is like calling off the guard Christ has put on our hearts and minds. It is like saying to Christ; I want to live my way, so leave me alone.

Though He doesn’t completely leave us, (Thank goodness), He allows us to move away from Him and the guard He has placed on our hearts and minds moves away with us. This leaves us open to attacks from satan; and more temptation to sin. If we don’t confess our sin; and forsake it, we move into a rebellious condition, and that in turn can lead to moving further from Christ.

Peace is part of the Fruit of the Spirit:

Galatians 5:22 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Notice that it is called the “fruit of the Spirit” and not the “fruits of the Spirit”. These characteristics combine to make up the fruit of the Spirit. We can’t truly possess the fruit of the Spirit unless we have all of these together. Peace is a blessing from God; but it needs to be combined in our spirit, by the Holy Spirit, with love, joy, forbearance, kindness, goodness and faithfulness.

To receive peace, we must seek and pursue it

Psalm 34:14 -Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Notice that the first requirement is to “turn from evil and do good”. To receive God’s peace, we must first receive His salvation. We must have a change of heart and mind that can only come by believing the gospel and inviting Christ to live in and through you. Once our heart is turned to Him; changes will start to take place in the way we think and how we act. We will feel a call toward holiness and righteousness that wasn’t there before we gave our heart to Him.

We are still free to ignore that call and go our own way; but not without suffering within our spirit or possibly feeling separated from God. When this happens, the only way to get right again is to confess our sins and ask forgiveness.

When we are spiritually connected to God we are free to seek peace from Him. Remember, that the Holy Spirit lives within you and will give you peace from within. There may be a storm around us; but we can seek and pursue the peace of God within. The world can’t touch that kind of peace.

Let vengeance to God, to inherit the blessing of peace

1 Peter 3:9 – Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

A heart full of vengeance cannot receive the blessing of peace. Do not seek your own revenge. God has said “Vengeance is mine”. Do not return evil for evil (of your own), or insult for insult (of your own). To do so will forfeit your peace.

Repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. Peace that passes all earthly understanding, is a blessing that God wants to give us. But we are called to forgive, and to let the vengeance to God.

Romans 12:19 & 20 – 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.  20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Attempt to live at peace with everyone

Romans 12:18 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

We should attempt to live at peace with everyone. Sometimes that isn’t possible. The other person may not desire to be at peace with us. Or they may be unwilling to forgive. But we should do all that is within our power to live in peace with those around us.

Surrender your anxiety to God

1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

God has told us to cast all our cares, or anxiety on Him. We cannot experience His peace without first surrendering our state of worry. Anxiety is the opposite of faith and trust.

God wants us to have faith in Him and trust Him completely. If we hold on to worry, anxiety, anger or an unwillingness to forgive; we are not trusting God to take care of the situation in His way and in His time. Therefore we forfeit the peace He longs to bless us with.

John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Overcome evil with good

Romans 12:21 – Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Evil exists in this world. We will all come in contact with it at one time or another in our lives. God tells us that we need not be overcome by evil. He doesn’t say we won’t have evil in our lives; but that we don’t need to be overcome by it. In fact, he says we can overcome evil with good. Instead of dwelling on the evil; we are to think about the good, and to be faithful in doing good. The evil will be in our lives; but we need not be overcome. We can overcome evil with good.

Peace in the midst of trouble

John 16:33 – I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

God doesn’t promise that we will not have trouble; in fact He says we will have trouble in this world. But He wants us to know that we can have peace, in Him, during the storms in our life. He wants us to take heart and believe that He has overcome the world! His Holy Spirit is living inside of us, and will give us peace if we seek and pursue it in His righteousness.

Perfect peace for those who trust in God

Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.

The peace that God gives is perfect, as He is perfect. But we must trust Him and surrender all unrighteousness to Him . We must cast all our cares upon Him; knowing that He cares for us, and is able to deliver us. Conditions must be right in our life for us to receive the peace that He desires to give those that love, trust and obey Him.

 The God of all hope

Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Our God is the God of all hope. All of our hope comes through Him. This verse tells us that He will fill us with all joy and peace. But don’t miss the second part of that sentence “as you trust in Him”. We must trust in God to receive the blessing of His peace in our hearts and minds. Then we will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.

The Lord of peace

2 Thessalonians 3:16 – Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

As I write this post; I am praying for each of my dear readers. My prayer is that if you are not saved, you would be able to come to a saving knowledge of Christ.  And believe that he died for our sins, confess to be forgiven, and surrender all unrighteousness to the healing presence of the Holy Spirit within. Then when all conditions are right; may the Lord of peace give you peace at all times and in every way. May the Lord of peace be with all of you.

  1. What a wonderful post to read. We will never go wrong putting all our faith and trust in the Lord. I have been experiencing trouble myself. I did not know what the answer was that I was seeking. Finally, I relented and gave the problem to God and stopped my worries. An inner calm and peace took the place of the worries. I know he will intervene on my behave and solve the problem. This is a very peaceful site to visit and I know I will be returning. I have it bookmarked. Do you have any stories to share about how God has changed your life?

    • Hi Chas.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I am so thankful to know that God is working in many Christian hearts to give peace and hope. Sometimes watching the news and looking around; we begin to believe that most people are turning away from God and living life on their own terms. We see so much misery, pain, addiction, abuse and violence stemming from the choice to ignore God’s power to intervene positively in these lives. It is so wonderful to hear from people who have surrendered their cares to God and have experienced the benefit of the fruit of the spirit; including of course, peace and hope.

I am very familiar with that inner calm and peace that you speak of. I have been the recipient of that peace in the most trying circumstances. It really has nothing to do with our earthly circumstances; but everything to do with the Holy Spirit living inside of us to give us peace that the world can’t take away, unless we let it.

Thank you for your kind words about my site and for bookmarking. Please come back soon. I love company and my door is always open. Please pray that this post and others that the Lord has given me will be read and impact lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. That means so much more to me than any monetary gain.

  2. I appreciate very much you expounding on peace, the fruits of the spirit and hope. A lot of people are lacking hope today in this world and an equal amount are lacking peace, but I would definitely say if you are lacking hope you are lacking peace. I like when you talk about casting your cares and anxieties on the Lord because it is a very hard thing to do for young Christians like myself who have a lot weighing on them including kids, work, and the pressures of life. Even when you talk about responding in vengeance to others I know that God says that even if you harbor angry thought towards your neighbor or say malicious things to him or her you have already committed murder. This is definitely relevant to the world we live in today because the world has no peace and many are praying for world peace instead of asking God to give them this fruit of the spirit to change their lives.

    -Wale O.

    • Thanks so much for reading and commenting Wale. Yes this world is moving further away from God, generally speaking. And they don’t understand their unrest and anguish of spirit. They reach out to fill themselves with worldly pursuits, and continue to neglect the one who created us and knows all about us. The only one who can fill that emptiness and give us peace and hope. You are right; peace and hope and the other fruit of the spirit work together. We need them all to experience the fruit of the spirit.

I know how hard it can be to cast all your cares upon the Lord, especially when you are younger. There are pressures that we don’t have as we get older. But then again, we have different pressures and a lot of losses to deal with that younger people normally don’t suffer with. The only way He will move in to give us peace is if we are able to surrender all our cares and pressures of life to Him.

The Lord definitely says that we will give an account of every idle word that comes out of our mouth. We need to be able to forgive so that we aren’t harboring anger or ill will toward anyone. Forgiveness is the key to resolving anger and resentment. We need to surrender our unforgiveness to God and allow Him to work in our heart to bring us to a point of being able to forgive. He is able.

  3. Hi, Jeannie,

It goes without saying that in your article you quote some powerful scripture on what incredible blessings God gives those through peace. That is if people are willing to accept this divine level of serenity and let it sink within our entire beings.

I’ve had some things occur in my life which have led to a high level of anxiety. Yet it always went back to my being able to seek the level of peace that only God our Lord and Savior can provide for those who are willing to accept what He has to offer.

I love the one sentence that you stated as “the Holy Spirit lives within you and it will give you peace from within” Such a tremendous and powerful statement Jeannie.

Thank you for posting such a powerful article! It is my fervent wish that a lot of people come read and absorb the message that you were delivering. With all that is happening in today’s world, so many people need to think of the powerful way that God can positively effect so many lives here on Earth!

    • Hi Jeff.

Thanks for the lovely comment. I am praying that each person who reads this post will take away from it what our Lord and Savior would have them know. You are right; there is not much peace in this world; and few people understand that it comes from God. They try to fill that God shaped vacuum with other things, like alcohol, drugs and indiscriminate sex. This leads to more anguish and pain in the long run. My heart aches for their anguish; but all I can do is pray.

Thank you for acknowledging how the Lord has worked inside your heart to give you peace within. He has done the same for me, many times. Once I can get past myself and my anxiety and move back in to a right relationship with Him; then He is ready and willing to bless me with that peace, no matter what I am going through. God is good, and all He asks is that we trust and obey.

Stop back again anytime. I love company and my door is always open.
