Are you feeling peaceful today? Are you calm in your spirit? If you answered no to these questions; there is something you should know. Peace is a blessing from God. It doesn’t have to do with our present circumstances, our bank account, our relationships, or our lot in life.
Peace is a spiritual gift. It is not dependent on anything or anyone on this earth. It is a peace that the world can’t understand. The world can’t give it to you, and the world can’t take it away; unless you allow it to. Only God can bless us with peace that passes all (earthly) understanding.
Psalm 29:11 – The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
God’s peace guards our hearts and minds
Philippians 4:7 NIV – And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The peace that God gives has the power to guard (or protect) our hearts and our minds. When we believe the gospel message and give our hearts and minds to God the power of Christ comes into our life in the form of the Holy Spirit. Christ lives in and through us:
Romans 8:10 – But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.
It is the power of Christ, in us, that will protect our hearts and minds. But there is another component here. We must have righteousness. That righteousness is Christ in us; but we can make that power weak by indulging in sin. In a sense, indulging in sin is like calling off the guard Christ has put on our hearts and minds. It is like saying to Christ; I want to live my way, so leave me alone.
Though He doesn’t completely leave us, (Thank goodness), He allows us to move away from Him and the guard He has placed on our hearts and minds moves away with us. This leaves us open to attacks from satan; and more temptation to sin. If we don’t confess our sin; and forsake it, we move into a rebellious condition, and that in turn can lead to moving further from Christ.
Peace is part of the Fruit of the Spirit:
Galatians 5:22 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Notice that it is called the “fruit of the Spirit” and not the “fruits of the Spirit”. These characteristics combine to make up the fruit of the Spirit. We can’t truly possess the fruit of the Spirit unless we have all of these together. Peace is a blessing from God; but it needs to be combined in our spirit, by the Holy Spirit, with love, joy, forbearance, kindness, goodness and faithfulness.
To receive peace, we must seek and pursue it
Psalm 34:14 -Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Notice that the first requirement is to “turn from evil and do good”. To receive God’s peace, we must first receive His salvation. We must have a change of heart and mind that can only come by believing the gospel and inviting Christ to live in and through you. Once our heart is turned to Him; changes will start to take place in the way we think and how we act. We will feel a call toward holiness and righteousness that wasn’t there before we gave our heart to Him.
We are still free to ignore that call and go our own way; but not without suffering within our spirit or possibly feeling separated from God. When this happens, the only way to get right again is to confess our sins and ask forgiveness.
When we are spiritually connected to God we are free to seek peace from Him. Remember, that the Holy Spirit lives within you and will give you peace from within. There may be a storm around us; but we can seek and pursue the peace of God within. The world can’t touch that kind of peace.
Let vengeance to God, to inherit the blessing of peace
1 Peter 3:9 – Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
A heart full of vengeance cannot receive the blessing of peace. Do not seek your own revenge. God has said “Vengeance is mine”. Do not return evil for evil (of your own), or insult for insult (of your own). To do so will forfeit your peace.
Repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. Peace that passes all earthly understanding, is a blessing that God wants to give us. But we are called to forgive, and to let the vengeance to God.
Romans 12:19 & 20 – 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Attempt to live at peace with everyone
Romans 12:18 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
We should attempt to live at peace with everyone. Sometimes that isn’t possible. The other person may not desire to be at peace with us. Or they may be unwilling to forgive. But we should do all that is within our power to live in peace with those around us.
Surrender your anxiety to God
1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
God has told us to cast all our cares, or anxiety on Him. We cannot experience His peace without first surrendering our state of worry. Anxiety is the opposite of faith and trust.
God wants us to have faith in Him and trust Him completely. If we hold on to worry, anxiety, anger or an unwillingness to forgive; we are not trusting God to take care of the situation in His way and in His time. Therefore we forfeit the peace He longs to bless us with.
John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Overcome evil with good
Romans 12:21 – Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Evil exists in this world. We will all come in contact with it at one time or another in our lives. God tells us that we need not be overcome by evil. He doesn’t say we won’t have evil in our lives; but that we don’t need to be overcome by it. In fact, he says we can overcome evil with good. Instead of dwelling on the evil; we are to think about the good, and to be faithful in doing good. The evil will be in our lives; but we need not be overcome. We can overcome evil with good.
Peace in the midst of trouble
John 16:33 – I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
God doesn’t promise that we will not have trouble; in fact He says we will have trouble in this world. But He wants us to know that we can have peace, in Him, during the storms in our life. He wants us to take heart and believe that He has overcome the world! His Holy Spirit is living inside of us, and will give us peace if we seek and pursue it in His righteousness.
Perfect peace for those who trust in God
Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
The peace that God gives is perfect, as He is perfect. But we must trust Him and surrender all unrighteousness to Him . We must cast all our cares upon Him; knowing that He cares for us, and is able to deliver us. Conditions must be right in our life for us to receive the peace that He desires to give those that love, trust and obey Him.
The God of all hope
Romans 15:13 – May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Our God is the God of all hope. All of our hope comes through Him. This verse tells us that He will fill us with all joy and peace. But don’t miss the second part of that sentence “as you trust in Him”. We must trust in God to receive the blessing of His peace in our hearts and minds. Then we will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
The Lord of peace
2 Thessalonians 3:16 – Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
As I write this post; I am praying for each of my dear readers. My prayer is that if you are not saved, you would be able to come to a saving knowledge of Christ. And believe that he died for our sins, confess to be forgiven, and surrender all unrighteousness to the healing presence of the Holy Spirit within. Then when all conditions are right; may the Lord of peace give you peace at all times and in every way. May the Lord of peace be with all of you.
